12000 Tractors in Iowa Yet Horses Remain Needed

Ames Feb 20 There are about 12000 farm tractors in Iowa with one tractor for every 16 farms according to EH V Collins assistant professor at Iowa State college. He says 5 to 90 percent of tractors studied are considered paying investments and notes tractors will not fully replace horses as some tasks like hauling bundles to the thresher and corn husking require horse labor. Under average conditions two horses are needed per 40 acres of corn.

Hair-Tonic Fatal in Omaha Case of Booze Mixing

Percival A. Johns Williams 45 and Charles Ingraham 40 drank hair tonic labeled for booze. They bought the preparation from an Omaha barber supply house. Williams is dead and Ingraham near death. Others fell ill as the substance caused poisoning.

Bremer Pioneer of 1857 Dead at 76

Henry Harmening senior, a long time Bremer county settler who arrived in 1867, died in Tripoli at age 76 after a long illness. He lived on a farm near Tripoli before moving to town thirteen years ago. Survived by his widow and nine children including H. C. Harmening of Waverly.

Farmers Seek Six Percent Profit Guarantee for Farmers

Des Moines February 20 Farmers urge a six per cent railroad profit guarantee be mirrored for farmers if Congress passes the railroad profit guarantee. The Corn Belt Meat Producers association adopted resolutions calling for immediate legislation to assure farmers receive a similar return. Similar resolutions were previously adopted by Wisconsin grain growers and Illinois farmers.

Humboldt Indiana February 20 nearly 3850 dollars worth of butter eggs and chickens have been marketed by Mrs John Jensen of the Arthur road during the past two years she has kept poultry and dairy figures for record purposes and says the amount will likely exceed the yearly pin money goal of two thousand dollars.
