Plan to Sell Smoke on Market Ends in Arrest
Reading, Pa. Feb. 20. A scheme to sell soft coal smoke at high prices led to the arrest of David W. Rothensies, promoter and horseman, after a warrant by Magistrate Wolff. He faces charges of obtaining money under false pretenses, having been held on $15,000 bail for a Syracuse court appearance. Dr George P Hill says Rothensies received $5,606 in cash and notes for $26,000. The Universal Smoke Reducing Company of News claimed a Syracuse plant to reduce smoke and sell stock. Prospective investors were shown the works and stock sold for 1 to 4 cents a share with promises to rent the device and turn soot into paint. The paint proposition failed to materialize in Reading and nearby towns.
