River mystery gang camps on Wapsie delta in 1902
Rock Island train robbery lore unfolds as hunter spots five men on Spring creek banks near the Wapsie delta. The same gang that held up a Rock Island mail train near Davenport earlier faced post office inspectors and detectives across eastern Iowa. Two lookouts had prepped the site while others fled toward Illinois after the big cut robbery. The tale ties to earlier Holdups near Savanna and a Texas saloon dispute that led to gunplay and confessions, with a buried treasure claim adding to the saga.
