Metz and Alsace Lorraine Under German Dominion Then France Again
A decades long travelogue through Metz shows a city transformed by German modernization yet haunted by conquest. The railroad station, grand avenues, and German monuments clash with French cathedrals and streets as the author recalls 1870, the Moselle landscape, and the bruise of occupation. The piece contrasts French soul with German order, notes people fleeing conscription, and ends with Metz as a symbol of resistance and renewed French identity.
