First Successful Blood Transfusion in Clinton

In Clinton on Tuesday afternoon Dr H A White aided by Dr H E Martin performed the first successful transfusion in the city and one of Iowa's early such operations. They connected the arteries and veins of Benjamin Kammer of Lost Nation and donor John Severine for eleven minutes, saving Kammer's life despite heavy blood loss. Severine, a stranger to Kammer, donated about a quart of blood and recovered enough to leave the hospital the next day. The operation followed prior brain abscess surgery on a patient as well.
