Iowa farmers in the eastern meat belt may profit by raising feeder cattle on Benton Tama Linn and Marshall County farms. Prospects for next year look good despite the price cycle peak. Legume pastures could raise carrying capacity, but soil acidity and hills limit legume growth in the region.

Alfalfa campaign in Howard county boosts future growth

Cresco Iowa February 18 Eleven meetings with a total attendance of 373 were held despite impassable roads for last week’s alfalfa campaign. County Agent Lester Mericle reports 1000 pounds Grimm and 350 pounds sweet clover seed ordered through the farm bureau. Alfalfa Hutch, known speaker, urged replacing oats and corn with alfalfa, arguing higher returns and healthier soils. He cited 1927 county crops: oats 59,991 acres at 28 bushels, corn 56,854 acres at 23.2 bushels, barley 5,900 acres at 26.6 bushels, and 106 acres of alfalfa at three tons per acre. Using prices, one acre alfalfa yielded $31.60 more than the mixed value of oats, corn, and barley. He warned that substituting 20,000 acres of alfalfa could raise county crop value by nearly a million dollars, and urged growing alfalfa to reduce reliance on commercial feeds.
