Endless contest in Steele Scott race for district seat

Sioux City Feb 3. For a month the Steele Scott contest for Congress in the Eleventh Town district has continued with a recount underway. Steele, a Democrat, has overturned an early lead credited to Scott, a Republican, by 76 votes district wide with counties awaiting recounts. Witnesses described ballot handling irregularities, especially in Sioux City precinct two, where ballots were mishandled and uncounted, with a recount shifting votes. Osage, Feb 5. George Richman, 15, was killed at Gardner Nursery when machines caught him, breaking neck and arms in a fatal accident.

Dubuque Girl 14 Weds Husband Ig Dubuque City

A 14 year old girl from Dubuque eloped with 19 year old Fred Smith claiming age, then vanished after telling her mother the marriage. Authorities notified in surrounding cities as the girl reportedly returned home then left angrily and has not been seen.

Stuckslager Nominated to Iowa Education Board

Des Moines February 9 Cox WL Harding asked the Iowa legislature to confirm W O Stuckslager of Lisbon as a member of the state board of education. The senate sent the appointment to a committee after an executive session. Stuckslager was named to fill the unexpired Funk term and Harding seeks confirmation for the full six year term starting July 1.

The 1843 overland movement from Iowa to Oregon was organized on a military basis by about two companies of around 100 men each plus families. Articles governed each company. provisions included heavy outfitting of 100 pounds flour, 30 pounds bacon, salt, powder, weapons, and animal teams. Journeys lasted about 150 days with ferries built for river crossings. few rivers blocked passage, except the Missouri at Council Bluffs where a ferry was used.

Iowa Veterans Fight $50,000 Vicksburg Trip Bid

Des Moines reports heavy opposition in the house appropriations committee to a proposed $50,000 state appropriation to send Iowa Vicksburg veterans to a peace jubilee in October. A $65,000 request for a Marshalltown soldiers home building would be granted from program funds, but the Vicksburg trip may require nonstate funds. Some suggest split $25,000 for the trip and $25,000 for the home, yet veterans object.

Vicksburg Trip Funds Debate Aired Before House Committee

Members of a committee argued it might be wiser to spend money to comfort old soldiers at Marshalltown rather than fund a trip to Vicksburg. Col J C Bealer of Cedar Rapids Col D J Palmer of Des Moines and Superintendent Whitehill spoke before the house committee yesterday afternoon about authorizing a special commission to oversee the Vicksburg appropriation.

Sale of Flynn farm near Des Moines proposed in Iowa Senate

A bill introduced in the Iowa Senate plans to sell the Flynn farm west of Des Moines now state owned and used as a custodial farm. Senators Afors Hale of Cedar and Wrailey of Lee back the measure with Senator Hate supporting purchasing land near Anamosa for the custodial farm use.

Wreck Victim Dies After Skull Fracture Operation

Creston Iowa Feb. reports that EH Davis of Knoxville Illinois, injured in the Cromwell Iowa wreck near here days ago, died yesterday from complications after surgery for a skull fracture. The death toll rises to five.
