Survey aims to ease freight routes with new Belle Plaine cut-off
A twelve man Chicago and Northwestern railway survey team began locating a new cut-off from the Belle Plaine south yards southeast along the Town River valley toward Dayton. The line would bypass heavy grades near Belle Plaine and Luzerne, linking Mairstown and Watkins with a longer route and future yards and a roundhouse planned in southwest Belle Plaine. Local freight and passenger traffic would stay on the existing double track. A work crew is expected to begin main work when weather allows. The Belle Plaine Commercial Club is pursuing a hospital here, supported by local sentiment. The Reliance Brick and Tile Co. reports thriving brick output and plans to begin pressed brick and install an electric excavator, with fourteen kilns and power from its own electric plant, to satisfy six months of orders.
