Ice Bridge Breaks. Three Die In Niagara Gorge Tragedy
Niagara Falls, Feb 5. A collapsing ice bridge swept a man, woman, and 17-year-old Burrell Heacock into the torrent near the whirlpool. Heacock perished after heroically assisting others. The couple, believed to be Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge Stanton of Toronto, were last seen struggling along the ice before vanishing under the rapids. Four others reached shore safely as the field of ice drifted toward the river. A dramatic rescue by workers and police saved some, but the tragedy ended with the couple and Heacock lost to the falls. Fire in Lehigh, Iowa, adds a separate local note of destruction and costs.
