Emissary of Diaz Executed by Villa in Juarez
Francisco I. Guzman, tied hands and blindfolded, was shot in Villa's yard in Juarez after meeting Villa in a bid to swing support from Maderos rivals. Guzman had recently arrived from Havana and was said to carry a secret Diaz mission to induce Villa to back Diaz against Carranza. Initial reports misidentified another man, Bonales Sandoval, who sought asylum in the United States. Guzman, once secretary to Emilio Vasquez Gomez, had links to the Orozco revolt and Huerta conspiracies. The execution followed a brief inquiry into the pool of blood and confirmation by rebel leaders that Guzman died in the yard.
