The Corn Belt Telephone Co spent 75000 dollars in Waterloo in 1914 with heavy underground and aerial cable work to replace pole lines and open wires. Nearly a thousand new telephones were added, private exchanges installed, and over 56000 feet of ducts laid with 1200 miles of copper wire. Western Union saw major growth, adding staff, clocks, lockers, and preparing for battery replacement. gas and electric via Citizens' Gas and Electric expanded distribution and removed many poles.
