First Bridge Across the Cedar in Waterloo 1859
A historical note on Waterloo's first Cedar River bridge built in summer 1859. Plans for a toll bridge at Fifth street shifted to a free crossing led by G. W. Couch. The wooden structure suffered losses from ice and floods, was rebuilt, and later replaced by iron and then concrete bridges by 1903.

Christie Engine Company Drives Waterloo Growth with Air-Steam Engine
Waterloo gains a major industrial push as the Christie Engine Company builds a power plant and factory on a 31 acre site. The Christie air steam Corliss engine, with two fourteen inch cylinders and a three foot stroke, weighs 44 600 pounds and is praised as highly economical, potentially cutting coal use by half and surpassing older engines. If plans succeed, Waterloo could become a leading manufacturing hub in five years, joining Milwaukee and St Louis in hosting multiple engine makers and thousands of skilled workers.
