Harvard Oregon Clash on New Year’s Day in Pasadena

New Year’s Day 1921 will feature an unprecedented intercollegiate game as Harvard faces Oregon at Pasadena in the Tournament of Roses. The Crimson and the Webfoots, both highly ranked, meet without a championship at stake, reflecting expanding schedules and broadening appeal of autumn football. Oregon lost only once in 1919 while Harvard won eight of nine, with mixed results against major foes, and past intersections hint at strong eastern vs western comparisons.

Whisky Camouflaged as Coal Found in Chicago Yard

Deputy revenue agents raided C and E I yards on Twelfth Street and uncovered two carloads of St Louis whisky camouflaged as soft coal shipments. Barrels and cases were hidden under coal in one car while the other car, marked loaded and sealed, disclosed more Missouri liquor. The goods were seized with Uncle Sam’s seal placed and guards posted for transfer to a warehouse. Authorities could not estimate the total liquor taken. The crackdown follows a wave of alcohol poison deaths and robberies. Capt. Hubert Howard will lead the first anti booze drive, asserting nonbeverage alcohol cannot be sold except for medical use, and dealers risk license loss and prosecution. District Attorney Clyne ordered Henry Isaacs to produce 30 days of nonbeverage alcohol sale records from a South Halsted street drug store, which revenue men have monitored for weeks.
