Secret Police Scandal Hearings Probe Slush Fund

Former United Police head William F. Stine, who vanished with a large share of a $66,000 slush fund, was denounced as dishonest and a body snatcher by Lieut. James V. Larkin during hearings before the city civil service commission. Larkin testified about Stine and outlined lobbying efforts for a police pension bill and the organization’s funding of ballots and envelopes in a 1916 campaign. Larkin said Stine left the group with the money before a Springfield visit. Separately, English pheasants and wild mallard ducks were shipped to the United States to stock sanctuaries under the American Game Protective and Propagation Association, with plans for restocking and hunting on surrounding lands.
