Des Moines Dec 25 Adjt Gen Logan says disaffection among returning Iowa guardsmen will not cripple the guard. Many vow not to reenlist or take the new federal oath yet veterans recall similar pledges after the Spanish American War. He notes that some drop out after border service but many remain patriotic. Sophia Porter Awarded 11009 Damages in Affection Case
In Grinnell on December 25 the Grace Hershman affection suit Sophia Porter vs Grace Hershman again went to the superior court. The jury awarded the plaintiff 11009. Nearly 75 witnesses were heard but most testimony was read from transcripts. The first trial produced a verdict near 10000 to 15000 and the second 10000.

Keokuk officials announced that the city drinking water has been pronounced unfit for use by the state board of health after weeks of investigation by chemists sent to inspect the water supply. This followed earlier United States inspectors reporting contamination.

Amazing Increase Shown in Deposits of State Banks
Des Moines reports the Iowa banking department shows a record surge in bank deposits across state and savings banks and trust companies under state control. Compared with last year, deposits rise by 64.85 million and exceed the November 1, 1914 level by about 75 million, driven by high farm prices and strong crops. Overdrafts drop versus last year, profits rise since September, and 10 new banks formed since September with 46 since November 1, 1916. The call covers conditions up to December 1.

The city reports widespread charity with stores donating coats hats toys and shoes and over 600 Christmas trees placed downtown.
