Waterloo resident Augustus C. Tatro, 3, recalls a 1861 Union gunboat blockade across the Pheissippi River in Kentucky. He says 20 soldiers cut a mile long malleable iron chain with 19 pound links after a dark rainy night, freeing the channel for gunboats with no shots fired. The chain once connected bluffs and heavy cannons and was buried when a bluff caved. a 60 year later landslide uncovered it.
