Roads Control U.5 Water Lines Tions Makes Report
Coastal Lake vines and Canals Owned by Railroads are examined in a report detailing road and water line controls. The piece notes railway ownership intersecting with local infrastructure and governance questions.
Commissioner Conant Reports Pressure by Rail and Water Lines
Principal features of Conant's report to President Taft show railroads and steamship combines dominating domestic steamship routes. Waterways along Atlantic and east coasts largely auxiliaries of railroads, suppressing competition, with New Haven system and Eastern Steamship company shaping New York City to New England traffic. Railroads own key through lines on the Great Lakes and control private canals, urging further federal regulation of joint rail and water traffic.
