Story of El Cid and Ximena in Castilian history
A Castilian grandee De Bivar and his son Rodrigo Diaz, later known as El Cid, are recounted through legend and chronicle. Rodrigo kills Oviedo to avenge his father, wins Ximena, marries her, and becomes a mercenary ruler. The tale follows his exile, freebooting campaigns, and eventual lordship over Valencia and Murcia, with Ximena defending Valencia after his death. The piece closes with a note on edible flowers and petals used as food.
