Common Weeds Most Dangerous in Iowa, Dr. Pammel Claims

Dr. L. H. Pammel of Ames outlines that annual weeds, controllable by cultivation, cost Iowa farmers more than hardier species. He notes higher corn yields when fields are weed free, citing a Jasper county example of 100 vs 50 bushels per acre and a state average potential rise from 42.5 to 60 or 65 bushels. He warns marsh cress and foxtail as costly hazards, with shoofly seed lasting up to 75 years, controllable by fall plowing and intensive spring cultivation.
