Nellie FB Holderness a 28 year old dining room girl at the psychopathic hospital in Iowa City Iowa showed marked improvement from the day before when she was severely burned. Hospital attaches said she would recover. Her dress caught fire while she was working as a pastry toaster. Margaret Driscoll a hospital cook tore Miss Holderness burning garments from her, probably saving her life.

Mrs Kate Weseling of Arcadia Carroll county suffered facial and head cuts when her car collided with Rock Island train 66 due at Cedar Pass at 11 45 am She was en route to pick up Iowa State Teachers College students and was taken home with injuries not believed serious at that time
Grundy Center Dec 20 Mrs Ollie Bunt of LeMars is improving after a furnace explosion at her sister Mrs Thomas Truesdale home. She suffered serious injuries and was feared dead for a time following the accident yesterday.
New York December 20 thousands of radio listeners stood by during a minute of silence for the men entombed in the wrecked submarine. Eastern networks WEAF and WJZ in New York shut down at 10 30 p m inviting prayers for the safe delivery of those aboard who might still be alive.
Huron South Dakota December 20 Roy Rogers Twin City police character and Roy Shea Sioux City Iowa sentenced to 15 years each in the state penitentiary for the June Farmers and Merchants bank robbery. Judge Alva Taylor imposed Rogers sentence first and later Shea. Two others Pat Hanley and P T Driscoll also serving sentences for the same offense.
Washington December 20 Representative Britten told the House Naval Affairs Committee that Rear Admiral Thomas P. Magruder’s economy proposals would cost about one billion dollars. Britten pressed Magruder, saying he failed to back his charges with figures despite presenting himself as a naval expert in a magazine article.
Omaha dispatch reports Union Pacific employees including agents telegraphers and others receive a wage increase of 3 cents per hour effective January 1. About 1 000 workers east of Ogden Utah will be affected and annual payroll will rise by roughly 80 000 dollars.
Paris Dec. 20 The second half of France's naval program totaling 854000000 francs was adopted by the chamber of deputies. It covers 15 warcraft of various classes to be laid down between 1927 and 1932 including one cruiser six torpedo boat destroyers five submarines one minelayer and two gunboats.
An unidentified woman carrying a four year old child leaped from a sixth floor Brooklyn apartment window to the pavement. The child was killed instantly and the woman died soon after at Kings County Hospital.
New York telegram reports Daniel Michael Galvin, a crew member aboard the submarine S-4, wrote to his brother from Cape Cod Bay days before the accident that he would not swap his job for any in the city, saying he liked the work very much.
Ruth Elder and Captain George Haldeman, co pilots of the trans Atlantic airship American Girl, arrived in Anniston from Atlanta for a home town welcome. More than 20 000 people packed the airport to greet them.

In Des Moines area a gasoline pan exploded on a stove killing Mrs. Bert Yocum 40 Spencer. A furnace blast fatally injured George Bowers 34 Des Moines. his attempt to build a fire led to the explosion. Mrs Ollie Bunt of LeMars and the Trousdale home in Grundy Center suffered injuries and damage.
Catholic, Protestant and Jewish leaders will meet in secret sessions at the University of Iowa January 2 to 4 for the first United States conference on religion in state universities. They will discuss church state cooperation in teaching religion and examine the Iowa school's operation as an example.
Six couples in Council Bluffs and nearby towns faced last minute delays as frantic parents called long distance to halt arranged marriages. Each pair had licenses and had gone to Rev. Martin A. Mucker for ceremonies. Names include Roy Sarrick, 24, with Doris Deal, 15, from Missouri Valley Ia, and Claude White with Myrtle Shuey, and E A Shuey with Irene Porter of Tekamah Neb.
Riverton Iowa authorities investigate the death of 77 year old Joseph Barton whose body was found in a bloodstained room at his farmhouse. Barton was beaten to death with skull fractures. An autopsy began and may be completed today. Money found in his pockets and intact valuables suggest no robbery motive. The body was discovered by two youths at Barton's farm. his ex wife resides nearby.
In Hyde Park a pair of bandits wearing raccoon coats and driving a sport coupe committed 20 robberies in one hour in the University of Chicago district. They stopped lone pedestrians, took their Christmas change, and fled, police reported.
Union County Farm Bureau members adopted a unanimous resolution against any form of road bonds at the county convention in Affton. The group notes they defeated a county bond issue at a special election last summer and pledges to oppose statewide or county road bonds.
Des Moines December 20 Thelma Smith former hotel bellboy sues Pete Collani G F Cady and Geo C Atkins for 15000 alleging his left ear was bitten off during a disturbance in a hotel room. Smith says the others attacked him when he went to quiet the scene.
