Soldiers at Camp Dodge prepare for Christmas under uncertain furlough orders. Barracks are patched to keep out cold with coal from nearby mines and Melcher, a thirty mile haul. Fire damaged the Hyman bakery in Town Falls Iowa, causing roof and wall damage and about 1000 dollars in loss. Investigators suspect spontaneous combustion from old sacks. building owned by W M Marsh and occupied by L T Hyman. Insurance adjustments pending before repairs begin.

Former Iowa Falls Woman Dies in California

Town News reports the death of Mrs. W. B. Morton in California from apo plexy. A Davenport native, she lived in Iowa Falls 26 years before moving with her family to Altadena six years ago. She is survived by husband and children Dr. L. B. Morton Mary Pollock W G Morton Robert Morton and Helen Morton.

Ames College Livestock Wins Big at Chicago Show

Ames Iowa Ta 15 Iowa State college livestock returned from the 1917 international livestock exposition in Chicago with 1490 dollars in prizes and 53 ribbons. They captured seven championships 18 firsts 17 seconds four thirds three fourths and three fifths along with the grand prize of 190 dollars for the best general college exhibit of five cattle five fat swine and five fat sheep. The prize has been awarded to Iowa State college nearly every year in the eight internationals.

Milk Cost Higher Says Dairy Expert

Homer L Harper of McHenry county Illinois testifies before the federal milk commission with a high milk cost estimate of 5 052 hundred pounds based on a survey of 116 farms and 2 028 cows. He notes 17 percent of cows are being sold and cow buying at 1 percent with 75 of 115 farms selling milk cows and 40 not disposing of any. He argues farmers want grain price regulation to focus on grain raising.

Pardon Brings Free Death for Iowa Man

Gov Harding’s pardon of Willam Adams from Fort Madison prison led to his death at his sister’s Albion home. Convicted in 1898 for poisoning his uncle Charles Russell of Bangor to gain the heir’s estate, Adams was 57 and had served in prison for life.
