Officers Shot by Gangsters In Flying Car

Police in Williamson and surrounding counties hunted gunmen after two gunmen circling Herrin City Hall in an automobile fatally wounding Patrolman Elmer McCormick and wounding Chief John Stamm. McCormick, brother of Mayor Marshall McCormick, was shot through the chest and listed in critical condition. Stamm was only lightly hurt. Authorities found no clear link to recent gang activity.

Shooting near city hall shocks council meeting crowd

A gunman opened fire as officers gathered near the fire hall beside the city hall after a council meeting. McGormick was at the hall door talking with the mayor when the shooting occurred, and the gunman fled southwest toward Jackson County.
