Acquittals in Two County Bootlegging Cases
Juries in two bootlegging cases in this county returned acquittals after prolonged deliberations. In state v Landy a quick verdict followed a short jury stay. In state v Peters, testers and barbers testified, but the panel declined to convict, prompting temperance officials to lament weak evidence and anticipate more trials ahead. Peters operated a barber shop and pool room on Sycamores Street. Detective Moore testified for the state, while defense witnesses challenged the sales claims. County Attorney Hoxle and assistant McCoy urged further actions, including Maxwell Case. The Dry movement faced disappointment, and future pleas of guilty were deemed unlikely as nearly all defendants would be tried with twelve men. The Peters panel also saw challenges to potential juror Mal O Keefe, and remarks from venireman about the detective drew comment.
