Pioneer William Marquis Built Ties With Miami Indians
William Marquis born August 3 1826, a Bremer county pioneer in Iowa, recounts seven trips to Kansas with Miami Indians, teaching English and trading. He helped move the Miami tribe, owned 400 acres in Bremer and 430 across the Black Hawk line, and ran the Metropole hotel. He recalls a frugal pioneer era with neighborly loans and rare crimes, and notes long friendship with former Mayor Rector.
