Tragedy at Bremer County Farm Ends in Double Death
John E. Schmidt and wife were found shot to death at their home near Leaver Iowa. An inquest found death by murder and death by own action. Schmidt, a known drinker and violent when drinking, likely killed his wife with a shotgun and then died. Neighbors recall a quiet past with a violent temper during intoxication. The couple had no children and left surviving brothers, a sister, and a brother-in-law nearby. The scene was reported to police by neighbor Henry Rector who last saw the Schmidts alive.
