Iowa hay crop short this year despite demand
Ames reports Iowa produced over a million tons less tame hay than 1927 and 595000 tons below the 1922-26 average. Experts say shortages in adjoining states raise prices, and soil treatments, especially for acid soils, could boost future alfalfa and clover yields to meet demand.

Feeding of Fresh Cow Big Item Says Chickasaw Tester
Fredericksburg Iowa December 6 dairyman says he lacks time to feed fresh cows until after shredding, but the practice reduces profits. Hadley Chickasaw cow tester notes fresh cows are key to grain markets, with 360 cows in his association averaging 359.7 pounds milk and 14.4 fat, plus several cows topping fat and milk records. Feeds Horses Like Steers Says They Will Not Founder
P M Strand a Worth county farmer feeds work horses in bunks like steers and reports the system saves time and health. Horses fed hay and grain ad lib during work, water freely, and cooled by hay before drinking when hot. Open sheds allow easy access, oats favored in heavy work, corn adjusted by condition. Some farmers in other states adopt a similar plan, Roy Snyder notes.

Proven Sire Bought for Rockzein Herd Near Charles City
A proven Iowa sire has been brought to the Ralph Rockzein Holstein herd two miles south of Charles City. The bull, weighing about 2,400 pounds, traces to a dam that was 1,086 pounds and a sire that held the A R O record. First nine daughters tested an average 340 pounds of butterfat at two years, while dams averaged 240 pounds when mature. If mature production follows, the herd could see a cream check rise from 1,080 to 2,160 dollars. The Rockzein herd now includes 25 cows and heifers averaging 393.5 pounds fat in association last year.
