Navy desertions blamed on drunkenness says judge advocate general
Washington, D. C. Dec. 6. Drunkenness remained the main cause for trials of enlisted navy deserters or those overstaying leave in the last fiscal year. Of 1,725 cases, pleas of drunkenness were entered in 384, and the "having a good time" excuse appeared in 362. Homesickness caused 40 sailors to take French leave, and eight cited hard work aboard as the reason. More than 41,000 cases were tried by court martial that year. Admiral Clark urged faster trials and fewer courts martial.
