Seventieth Congress Opens Amid Pressures and Global News
The Seventieth Congress convened in Washington at noon with little unrest as leaders plan swift action to save the union within three months. Meanwhile King George V’s health remains fragile, oxygen given, fever slight, and recovery uncertain. In sports, Western teams challenge the Big Three showing wide open competition. Alaska’s oil wealth and West interior policy loom large. A Chile earthquake disaster follows, with deaths, injuries, martial law in Talca, and massive rebuilding efforts under President Ibanez. Leadville, Colorado, the so called wickedest town, faces a federal grand jury probe into city governance and saloon activity as its diminished population endures.
