Old Gray Mare Poised To Rival Iowa Tune At Legion Meet
Indianapolis reports a Texas contender prepares to challenge Iowa in the American Legion National Convention song contest at San Antonio in October. The Old Gray Mare theme leads Texas entries with the Old Gray Mare Band of Brownwood set to perform and Sarah II appearing with Katie Merle Parks at the event. Legionnaire William G. Stewart of Brownwood claims the tune originated in Hood's Confederate brigade during the Civil War with a tale of a gray mare, pots and pans, and a rousing march that evolved into today’s song.
