G W Hanna Reflects On Early Black Hawk County Settlement
Excerpts from an 1884 address by George W. Hanna recount the founding of Black Hawk County. He recalls crossing the river at Rock Island, scouting Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls before roads or schools, and the improbable growth from a county of 100 settlers to a thriving region. He notes long delays for mail and grain, harsh winters, and the perseverance of early settlers including the first sermon in a Cedar Falls log cabin. He recounts his own long trek to Hudson and imagines the future of Cleak Prairie as a grove.
