Soldiers Return From Camp Dodge With Trophies Retained
Companies B and D I N G Waterloo returned from Camp Dodge after 17 days at the Blaza national guard encampment. About 120 personnel, including officers, came back in good health and high morale. They praised peacetime training as less strenuous than wartime days and noted the feeding prowess of Company D, with private mess funds funding ice cream and roasts. Private Leonard Cleveland earned a four foot trough for a large meal after consuming 22 large pancakes and eight messkits of ice cream. Company D earned two silver trophies from boxing and wrestling events, and the Waterloo units captured three field meet pennants. The old barracks will be replaced by stucco and slate buildings in a Spanish mission style, forming quadrangles for regiments with quarters for men and officers, recreational spaces, and clubrooms. The camp will house the entire state national guard and include stables and warehouses. First place went to Company B for rifle team, among other honors.
