Biggest Day in Market History at Waterloo Markets
The Waterloo markets saw their largest turnout this week with 63 wagons at the east side and about 1,500 people inspecting produce. Prices collapsed as watermelons went to 5 cents each, with three melons for a nickel signaling a broader market drop. Potatoes sold at $1.10 to $1.20 per bushel, eggs 19 cents a dozen, and live poultry and fish at prior week's prices. Patrolman Tom Morris enforced freshness by removing decayed fruit from sale. Local growers and visitors from nearby towns were noted, including W W H Ensign, Rev. J E B Ensign, and guests from Los Angeles and Earlville.
