Hagle Center Hosts Record Crowd at Mt. Carmel Picnic
At Eagle Center Iowa on August 24 the Mt. Carmel parish homecoming drew the day’s largest crowd. Over 500 guests ate chicken dinner served by parishwomen at noon and more than 500 attended supper. Mason City attorney E G Dunn, former gubernatorial candidate, was the principal speaker delivering a brilliant address. Morning and afternoon ball games and an evening bowery dance capped the program.

The death of Mrs. Ella Hamilton Durley at a summer lodge near Los Angeles on August 14 recalls her Waterloo years in the 1870s when she taught in east Waterloo schools. A prominent club woman in Southern California, she led literary and civic causes in Des Moines before moving to California about 11 years ago. As Miss Ella Adaline Hamilton she graduated from the University of Iowa in 1878 and later traveled abroad.
