Des Moines Couple Freed in Baby Death Case
In Des Moines on August 22 Judge Hubert Utterback freed 25 year old Harry Mennes and his 14 year old wife Edna on manslaughter charges over the death of their six month old Eva. The preliminary hearing found no criminal neglect, noting pitiful ignorance rather than wilful harm. The infant died August 14 and was found at their Hast Court apartment. Neighbors testified the mother kept the child clean and the husband worked daily. The court considered the case a distressing example of lack of knowledge rather than crime.
