Library Contains Indian Bibles in Sixty Tongues
Chicago Aug 18 The By We Avercote collection at the Newherr library holds the world’s most complete record of attempts to Christianize Native Americans. The shelf includes bibles or parts in 56 languages from tribes such as Cree Cherokee Mohawk and Pembascot with Eskimo and Aleut translations as well. B. W. Ayers built the Australian style collection after the Spanish American War adding Philippine and Hawaiian language bibles and Testaments. The work is difficult to augment as many languages fade.
