Alfalfa Yields Boosted by Soil Testing in Black Hawk County

Farmers in Black Hawk and Cedar Falls areas expanded alfalfa plantings this fall. County agent J. L. Uban reports 2,000 acres planned for Buck Hawk farms after extensive July soil tests across 90 farms covering 3,379 acres. Tests show lime and phosphate crucial for yields, with best results from mixed lime and acid phosphate. Sweet clover outyielded alfalfa by 50 percent in Cedar Falls plots, and varieties show Cossack leading. Uban offered free soil testing by request, signaling growing interest in alfalfa among dairymen and beet growers.
