Grinnell college alumni and affiliates show strong military service with 470 graduates in national service and about 107 commissions. Major figures include Lieut Col Palmar E Pierce on the general staff and Charles Saltz, brigadier general and signal officer. Forty five percent of fall entrants are in service this spring, with 20 percent of all alumni and 27 percent of ex-students in service. Six faculty in the army and eight others in Red Cross and YMC A war work. Women volunteers include three in France and canteen workers at the front. Fly’s family from Johnson county includes a Civil War captain father and a son Lt Eugene I. B. Why an aviator who flew from a battleship deck. Ely is often spoken of in Davenport and Johnson county. Two Floyd county youths, Marshall Shannon and Charles Krumrey of the Rainbow division, were killed in action in France July 16. Memorial services will be held Sunday for Krumrey.

Sioux City Aug 17 T Harry Moore former Journal reporter and secretary under Councilman W R Hamilton was arrested by Sheriff Jones and jailed on a lewdness charge. An affidavit by a woman alleges Moore lived with her at several city locations. Moore aided the Short Hamilton campaign before a frame up led to leaving the Journal for Nes Moines then returning to work for Hamilton as special secretary. He is nicknamed Hamilton's Convertor in underworld lore. He was released on a $500 bond signed by J L Levit.

Ankeny residents Mrs J Lorens and J C Leaverton were injured in a street collision with Harold Nims driving another car near East Seventh and Walnut streets. Train stops after drunken man lies on rails
In Dubuque Iowa on August 17 engineer G Mattox halted a heavy stock train when a drunken man lay head on the rails a short distance ahead. The sudden stop telescoped two cars killing five cattle and injuring several others. Twenty two head are missing. The intoxicated man was arrested charged with disorderly conduct and fined.
