Des Moines reports that Crowder advises deferment review for railroad men in essential jobs. Local boards urged to reconsider railroad cases not yet inducted, to grant deferrals when industrial grounds justify. Officials say skilled workers loss blocks transportation and supply chains.
Washington dispatch reports E G Dunn of Mason City a former Democratic governor candidate and Hawkeye leader plans to waive all deferments and enlist as a private to fight in World War I. He met with War Secretary Baker and travels toward Camp Gordon to join brother Bernard Dunn in Atlanta. Dunn favors trench fighting with bayonets and rifles and says he will enlist if the draft age rises to 45. The Iowa turnout and political scene remain heavily Republican in Dunn’s view.

In Des Moines on August 15 the Tax League held a meeting with about a dozen members. President A J Banks led the session, chaired by E I Nickle. secretary Carlishn kept minutes. The group faulted road improvement efforts and declared the road patrol law a costly failure. Senator Lindly criticized the law as misrepresented in the senate and would vote against it if given another chance. They fault federal aid for biasing county road work, criticized Taft for paving roads policy, and complained about rising county road costs from engineers and the state highway commission. A delegation visited the statehouse to speak with Gov Harding and Secretary Allen about the issues, but Harding was away in Sioux City and Allen had not yet reported for duty. They did meet Railroad Commissioner Dwight N Lewis, who heard complaints about stockcar delivery to stockyards to avoid peak heat.
Independence Tennessee August 1 4 Dedication of the big Buchanan County service flag containing 706 stars nine of which were cold was the feature of the county fair Tuesday afternoon. J E Bramwell of Marion delivered the dedication speech praising the S O V and the 700 stars. The flag was unfurled as the Star Spangled Banner played before a large crowd. Auto races and auto polo were highlighted at the fair Wednesday and Thursday.
Des Moines report states Provost Marshal Crowder ordered the registration of all men who turned 21 by June 5 1918 for August 24. Local boards were told to prepare rapid examinations and classifications to support the September call. Estimated Iowa registrations around 4000 await final class placement with expected Class 1 totals near 2400, reflecting prior patterns in the state.
Former congressman Edward Gillette of Clover Hills Place Valley Junction Des Moines died Wednesday at 11 am He was a one term House member and a Greenback supporter editor of the Iowa Tribune with General Weaver His second wife survives him He was brother to actor William H Gillette and son of a Connecticut senator.
Towa City August 15 Professor Stephen H Bush of the University of Town has been cited by France for bravery twice since arriving in January. The second citation follows a cablegram detailing his courageous care of the wounded in exposed areas while serving with the YMCA alongside Moroccan divisions. The notice notes the French admiration for Bush and YMCA workers in his unit and confirms his role as head of Romance languages at the university.
Davenport Iowa Aug 15 Miss Lucile Littig seven years old was instantly killed and Miss Eleanore Mueller eighteen was fatally injured when an automobile they rode in turned over after striking a rut eight miles north of Davenport. The machine swung and tossed them about twenty feet from the wreck. Miss Littig died instantly while Miss Mueller suffered a broken leg a broken collar bone a severe head wound and other injuries. Her death is momentarily expected. Both young women belonged to prominent Davenport families.
Des Moines Iowa's coal allotment from 4,406,000 tons to 4,000,000 tons was cut by the government. About one million tons had been delivered by July 1. Railroads in Iowa will generally use mine run coal to relieve steam railroad congestion, Fuel Administrator Webster announced.
Aug. 15 Des Moines. Capt. Fr. P. Woodratt of Knoxville, a Spanish-American War veteran, joins the federal fuel commissioner’s Des Moines staff. He will inspect industrial plants, especially those with war contracts, to ensure adequate coal supply and oversee government coal needs, working with the Army quartermaster department.

Officers say effort was halted but some material reached Chicago before recall. In another item a family feud ends with Ed Snyder dead and Adam Heilman badly hurt by a shotgun incident.
Iowa will form a 4000 member students' army training corps across its accredited colleges by September. Grinnell College president Dr John T Main heads a five week state campaign to enroll 18 to 21 year olds. Enlistment is voluntary with pay only in summer training.
A $100,000 fire severely damaged the I M Sinclair Packing storage warehouse in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night. Lightning during a thunderstorm struck the building and eight hours of firefighting followed. Much cured meat and $7,000 in burlap sacks were destroyed. The same storm damaged the Independent Laundry plant for about $15,000 and scorched coal overheated in the process. The storm also leveled entire corn fields across the county.
St Ansgar Iowa August 15 harvest over in the area with four threshing machines in operation. Grain yields exceed expectations Wheat reports the best in 40 years. Truck growers move potatoes and cabbage as carloads head to markets. About 325 acres onions 210 cabbage and over 1,000 potatoes to be marketed in the next 90 days with beans on a large area also planted.
