Chickasaw Cows Double Profits From Dairy Contest
New Hampton Iowa August 14 A year after forming a county dairy contest association Chickasaw records show 60 cows averaging 410 pounds of milk and 18.3 pounds of butterfat the first growth. In June 1924 after ten months of operation 90 cows averaged 474 pounds of milk and 28.45 pounds of fat with milk and fat per cow doubling. Of 63 cows culled during the year, profits rose due to tester J J Deakins whose work won 25 of 26 members to continue and drew 14 new farmers to apply. In the last month 370 cows averaged 684.3 pounds of milk and 27.1 pounds of butterfat with five sold for beef. The high cow from DeWilde Dairy yielded 1960 pounds of milk and 64.7 pounds of fat. DeWilde also led with 14 Holsteins at 1432 pounds and 31.9 fat. The year’s table shows profits by top herds versus lowest, with owners including Herrick, DeWilde Dairy, Tracy & Son, and Merrick & Son.

High winds flattened corn in Buena Vista Cherokee regions but most have straightened. Northern harvest hampered by heavy rains and some standing grain damaged. Early threshing yields reported as high as 86 bushels per acre in Dallas County. Overall cool moist weather favored second crop hay and forage postures.
