Rural Carriers Seek Higher Pay At Washington Meeting
M W Whitney reports that rural letter carriers at the Iowa state convention in Washington plan to submit resolutions to the post office department in Washington DC demanding a 24 mile route paid at 1500 dollars annually plus 75 dollars per mile over the standard. The move, along with other pay and condition reforms, passed the delegates. Carriers note they must supply their own rigs costing 700 to 800 dollars yearly, reducing take-home pay. Postmaster M H Kelly says local carriers have made no formal demands. With walkouts looming in other districts, Ohio and eastern areas discuss strategy as Iowa crews await action.
