Longstanding Virden Home Preserved in Waterloo Township
The Virden family, early settlers near Waterloo, Iowa, lived in the same house for over fifty years. Oscar and wife endured a log cabin built in 1851, then a frame structure using local lumber, with siding from native basswood still sound after a century. The photo from 1910 shows the sturdy, paint-protected dwelling and evergreen plantings begun by C. W. Virden in 1876.
