Purebred Sires Prove Worth in Allenstein
The Guernsey herd of H J Allenstein and Sons near here proves the value of purebred sires as they abandon grades. Starting seven years ago with few purebreds, they now have three purebreds and will display at Waverly fair. A cow in Wapsie Valley Cow Test Association produced over 70 pounds of butterfat, with another close behind. The herd shows better feeding and management, improving from 25 pounds butterfat in two years to 345 pounds average that year, with 17 cows now milked. The Allensteins seek success at state fairs and circuit stops.

Buckwheat Sown in Hail Stricken Field by Cedar Falls Man
Cedar Falls Aug 11 Henry Hansen sowed buckwheat on 20 acres of damaged corn after hail wrecked the field west of town. He double disced and planted about three pecks per acre July 7. The crop grew over a foot tall and showed promise as the season progressed. Nearby farms also suffered, with 25 to 29 acres of corn late but seemingly salvageable, while 20 acres of early oats were a total loss.
