Lightning Fire Destroys Barn at Charles Franke Farm
A lightning strike at the Charles Franke farm near Colwell caused a large barn to burn, destroying the hoghouse and corncrib with about 75 tons of hay lost. The threshing crew helped fight the flames and neighbors helped save the main house as wind shifted. The barn, 36 by 68 feet, was insured for 2000 dollars, but the loss exceeded that. Calves were saved, and the fire department arrived with chemicals to save remaining outbuildings.
