Ancient Belfry of German Lutherans Being Dismantled
Early today steeplejacks began tearing down the belfry of the old German Lutheran church at 424 Jefferson Street near Park Avenue marking the end of a landmark. The deteriorated tower posed a risk to nearby property and the owner chose demolition. The brick church, started in 1875 and finished in October that year at 2600 dollars, seated about 200. It was debt free at completion. The congregation moved years ago to Mapleson High Streets and is now known as the Lutheran church on Maple Street. The building was leased to the Christian Science Society for some years.
