Senator Watson Attacks Japan China Treaty Provisions

Indiana Senator Watson urged the Senate to reject the Versailles treaty provisions granting Japan control in Shantung. He argued Germany seized Shantung in 1898 and Japan expanded that control by force and secret 1917 alliances, urging withdrawal or a clear date before ratification. He warned Article 10 could pull the U.S. into war if China defends itself against Japanese rule. The speech framed the Shantung rights as historic wrongs tied to wartime coercion and Allied complicity.
