Dr. C. H. L. Mason of Calvary Presbyterian Long Beach resigns to join YMCA war work in France with Mrs. Mason. Three Mason sons volunteered. one already with Pershing in France. The family is praised for 100 percent patriotism as the minister cites duties to country and faith amid the Spanish American and current war.

Fall lights to buggies would cut down accidents

H C Bernbrook advocates requiring tail lights for all vehicles including buggies and wagons to reduce accidents. He cites New England practice where all vehicles are lit at night and says drivers fail to notice ahead vehicles, especially in dusty streets. A new manual from the department of agriculture titled Home Canning by the One-Period Cold-Pack is issued for housewives preserving surplus garden produce. Miss Tara Hawk supplies free bulletins in Black Hawk county via Courier and Reporter. Prisoners to Dig Peat for Fuel Supply

German prisoners of war will be put to work digging peat to bolster Prussia's fuel shortage. They will operate under Territorial supervision with extended army leaves. Engineers have been sent to major peat bogs like Crande Briere near Nantes to organize the work and minimize transport by serving factories nearby.

Van Pelt Leaves for East to Meet Hoover on Dairy Plan

Hugh Van Pelt departed yesterday for New York and other eastern points on business and plans to attend a Washington conference with Herbert Hoover, food administrator. Hoover invited dairy industry representatives to discuss the government program on conservation.

American Confirms Story of War Plot

Louis Einstein, ex special agent at Constantinople, supports the Times tale of a July 5 1914 German conference before the war. He says Marquis Garroni heard from German ambassador Wangenheim of the meeting where the war plan was decided, with the archduke murder cited as pretext and Serbia to face an ultimatum triggering war within 48 hours. The autoped, tested by the Washington post office, is praised for useful service.

Bryce Praises War Work of the Y M C A

Viscount Bryce former British ambassador to the United States writes to E C Carter praising the Y M C A war work among Allied troops. He notes ongoing American plans in France and England and urges that the American association, backed by American funds and energy, render the greatest service to the American expeditionary forces. He commends the organization for providing comfort recreation and literature to sailors and soldiers in Europe and stresses cooperation with Allied experience.

Trent ing Prisoners Set Free by the Japanese

Tokio reports thirteen nakivos of the Trentino, Corso and nearby Austrian districts who served as bluejackets on the Kaiserin Elizabeth, sunk at Tsingtau, were released by Japanese authorities and will be returned to Italy. They were nominal foes yet sympathized with the Entente, with one man attempting suicide in the camp.
