Watermelon Freight Drives Up Local Prices in Waterloo
A telegram to M. L. Bowman, secretary of the Greater Waterloo association, from a Mississippi grower reveals freight costs for watermelons. The grower offers melons at one and a quarter cents per hundred pounds, but freight of 70 cents per hundred pounds from Watervalley makes the delivered price skyrocket. The note highlights a curious imbalance where the grower gets about one fiftieth of carrier earnings for delivery. The text also references unsettled figures in Britain's cartography and navigation.
