Watermelon pigs at Iowa State college intrigue breeders

Ames Iowa April 28 Watermelon pigs are the latest in porkers at Towa State college. Five pigs striped like Georgia watermelons with three black litter mates were furrowed recently at the Towa Experiment station farm. They descend from the European wild boar used by the college in demonstration work until 1922 when it died in a fire. The mother is a high grade Poland China sow bred up from the wild boar mating by purebred sires. The sire is a purebred Poland China boar. The pigs are light brown with dark brown stripes lengthwise. They resemble little of their ancestral sire. The original wild boar was shown to demonstrate scrub stock degradation. Other breeding work shows the improving effect of a purebred sire on scrub females.
