Gardener Plans Arges Celery Crop In Cedar Heights

W W Foote and Henry Aelmons plan to raise four to five acres of celery this season on Foote garden land in Cedar Heights. Equipment for irrigation is being installed and one acre of early celery has been ordered. Foote formed a partnership with Aelmons, who rents Foote’s 20 acre place on a share basis. Aelmons recently moved from Michigan after living in Holland where he trained in gardening. Blight from hot summer nights remains a challenge. Relmonds hopes to overcome it. More celery will be planted later, with plants grown under frames. Celery hearts fetch good prices at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The garden already has considerable space planted, with onions up and other vegetables soon. Aelmons plans to grow radishes using a salt and ammonia mix to deter common radish troubles. The garden will also include street corn for city and suburban residents and professional gardeners and orchardists working in their yards amid the first real spring sunshine. Seeding oats, planting potatoes, and preparing corn land occupy farmers as spring progresses.
