Gunmen's Vengeance in Chicago Suburb Tragedy

Ben Newmark, former chief investigator for State's Attorney Crowe, was shot dead after bracing his bungalow with bars following threats from the underworld. His widow offered little help. Newmark had been doing private detective work and was politically tied to the Thompson organization. Meantime, across states, Republicans court delegates to the national convention as Hoover prospects rise in Ohio. Weather warnings, an Arctic flight by Wilkins and Eielson, and a tense draft Coolidge debate color the political and public life in brief.
